Below the title reads: Dedicated to Captain Andrews and the Officers and men of the 1st Battalion. On remarking the unsteadiness of the enemy's fire, I ordered Lt. Col Jones to advance his Rifles and attack; this was done in a most splendid manner they drove the enemy from the heavy guns, but in the act of taking possession of two heavy pieces in the Causeway close to the Toll House. I regret to say that Captain Andrews and four of his men were blown up by the explosion of an ammunition wagon fired by one of the mutineers." Extract from a despatch of Brigadier General Wilson dated 30 May 1857.

Orlando Norie (1832–1901)
Orlando Norie was a prominent British artist known for his military-themed watercolours and illustrations, particularly depictions of 19th-century British and colonial army regiments. Born in Belgium to Scottish parents, Norie had a keen eye for detail and captured the vivid colours and intricate details of military uniforms with remarkable accuracy.

He worked extensively for the print publishers Rudolf Ackermann and later for Henry Graves & Co., creating hundreds of illustrations that celebrated the pomp, pageantry, and discipline of military life. His works often included parades, battlefield scenes, and regimental groups, earning him widespread recognition among collectors of military art.

While Norie primarily focused on military subjects, his art also highlighted the human side of soldiers, portraying camaraderie and daily life within regiments. His legacy endures as one of the most prolific and celebrated military artists of the Victorian era. Today, his paintings are prized by collectors and serve as valuable historical records of military history and fashion.
