A fine example of this map of India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives with an ornamental title cartouche. The map was issued in Zatta’s Zatta’s Atlante novissimo, illustrato ed accresciuto sulle osservazioni, e scoperte rabic re più celebri e più recenti geografi, che ora per la prima volta si produce, a monumental four-volume work and was published in Venice between 1775 and 1785. The work was published in Venice between 1775 and 1785. This was one of the most comprehensive and one of the last great decorative atlases published in Italy in the 18th century.
Antonio Zatta (fl. 1757-1797)
Antonio Zatta was a prominent Italian editor, cartographer, and publisher. Aside from the many books he wrote, not much is known about his life. He could have been born as early as 1722 and died as late as 1804. His work flourished while living in Venice, between 1757 to 1797. He is best known for his atlas, Atlante Novissimo (1779–1785), and the many prints and books he made that were well-thought-out and aesthetically pleasing. In the Atlante Novissimo, Zatta published the first picture of the islands that Captain Cook had visited. This was possible because he had a big network from which to get information. Zatta wrote books about plays and buildings as well.
