Full title: Illustration for the Coronation Number of The Sphere, June 1902, to Celebrate the Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. The coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 9 August 1902. Originally scheduled for 26 June of that year, the ceremony had been postponed because of the king’s illness.
The scene depicted in the print where the future King Edward VII invests Indian princes with the Star of India is historically set in 1876. However, the print was created by William Barnes Wollen to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Originally scheduled for June 26, 1902, the ceremony was postponed due to the King’s illness and ultimately took place on August 9, 1902, at Westminster Abbey. Published in June 1902 in the Coronation Number of The Sphere, a prominent illustrated magazine of the period, this illustration captures the historical significance and public enthusiasm surrounding the coronation.
Wollen’s work is noted for its meticulous attention to detail and narrative vibrancy, qualities he brings into this piece. The print is rich in ceremonial imagery, perhaps depicting the grandeur of Westminster Abbey, the royal regalia, or the prominent figures present, all rendered in his evocative style. The artist, who is mostly known for his military and historical paintings, does a fantastic job of capturing the event’s seriousness and joy, which fits with Edwardian Britain’s sense of renewal and imperial pride.
This picture is historically significant because it shows not only an important national event but also alludes to how people felt during this period of change in Britain. Wollen’s work on the coronation would have been one of the most memorable visual records for modern audiences, bridging art and reportage in a way that spoke deeply to the public. This was because The Sphere was a respected newspaper with a wide readership.
