Pierre M Lapie (fl. 1779–1850)
French cartographers and engravers Pierre M Lapie and his son Alexandre Emile Lapie (1809–1850) worked in the early 19th century. The Lapies were commissioned officers in the French army with the titles of Colonel and Capitaine, respectively. Alexandre took great pleasure in bearing the title "First Geographer to the King" which can be found on a number of his atlases. Working individually and collectively, they issued four key atlases: the 1811 Atlas of the French Empire (Alexandre), the 1812 Atlas Classique et Universel (Pierre), the Atlas Universel de Geographie Ancienne et Modern (joint issue), and the 1848 Atlas Militaire (Alexandre). They also released many smaller maps and separate editions, all of which are beautiful and incredibly detailed. The accuracy of the engravings and detailed content of the Lapie firm's maps had a significant impact on German commercial map publishers in the mid-19th century, who went on to dominate the continental market with their maps.
