Plate no. 3 from Recollections of India. Drawn on Stone by J. D. Harding From the Original Drawings by the Honourable Charles Stewart Hardinge. Part I. British India and the Punjab

Charles Stewart Hardinge (1822–1894)
Charles Stewart Hardinge, a passionate amateur artist, was the eldest son of the first Henry Hardinge, Viscount. He accompanied his father to India when the latter was appointed Governor-General in 1844, serving in the capacity of private secretary. During his father’s tenure in India, Charles meticulously documented the intricacies of Indian life and landscape. He primarily created his paintings during his official visits to various locales, including Delhi and Lahore. His work, Recollections of India, accompanied by twenty-six lithographs, was segmented into two parts and released in 1847. The initial section bore the title British India and the Punjab, while the subsequent section was designated Kashmir and the Alpine Punjab. In a letter dated January 1847 to his half-brother, he expressed his appreciation for being a contributor to the Royal Album, possibly alluding to a collection of paintings held by the British Crown.

Upon his return to England, he engaged vigorously in conservative politics and secured a position in the House of Lords through election. He was regarded as highly productive in watercolour by numerous artistic organizations and showcased his works from 1849 to 1880. He authored a series of books entitled Rulers of India. In 1868, he assumed the role of trustee for the National Portrait Gallery, and in 1876, he became the chairman of the trustees, a position he diligently maintained until his passing.
