Vaugondy created an extremely detailed original hand-coloured map of India. The map encompasses the entire Indian Subcontinent, or Indostan or Empire of the Mogul, different kingdoms or states, the vast possessions of the English, and the other European establishments and runs as widely as from Central Asia to the Maldives and from Persia to Aracan in the east, with an inset map of the river Ganges in Bangladesh and a decorative title cartouche with an image of an elephant and palm trees. There are many place names noted, including Calcutta (Calichut), Goa, and Cananor. You can find extensive details about roads, cities, mountains, lakes, etc.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688–1766)
"Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (c. 1723–1786), were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. They revised the older material by adding many new place names. Louis XV appointed Didier Robert de Vaugondy as his geographer in 1760. Like Ortelius and Mercator, the Vaugondy's credited their sources, which has greatly benefited the study of the history of cartography during that period." (Source: Wikipedia)
