Map of India, the Maldive Islands, the Indonesian and Philippine Islands, from Atlas Rabic Portatif Rabic De Vingt-Huit Cartes Sur Toutes Les Parties Du Globe Rabic Re .. a L’usage Des Colléges, Des Pensions & Des Maisons Religieuses, etc.
First published as Atlas Moderne ou Collection de Cartes in 1777, it was intended primarily for “la jeunesse des Colléges & des Pensions, des Maisons Religieuses & toutes les personnes qui étudient ou enseignent la géographie,” and the foreword, after noting the success of the first edition, says it has been improved with this clientele in mind. It went through at least six editions before the end of the century and at least three in the nineteenth century. Many of the plates were revised during publication.
Louis Brion de la Tour (1743-1803)
Louis Brion de la Tour was a French geographer and demographer who lived between 1743 and 1803 and was the Cartographer Royal to the King of France, his official title being Ingenieur-Geographe du Roi.
He was one of the leading cartographers; much of his work was produced in collaboration with Louis-Charles Desnos (fl. 1750–1791), the Danish royal cartographer, who worked as a bookseller and topographical engineer for the Danish Crown. His most important work is generally considered to be his General Atlas of 1766.
