Jakob van Schley (1715-1779)
Jakob van der Schley aka Jakob van Schley was an accomplished engraver and draughtsman who worked out of Amsterdam and was closely connected to the Hague. Bernard Picart was his trainer, and the older man's style is evident in him.
He was also well-known for his finely engraved frontispieces and portraits and producing illustrations for La Vie de Marianne by Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux (1688-1763), published in The Hague between 1735 and 1747. He also engraved the frontispieces for a 15-volume edition of the complete works of Pierre de Brantome (1540-1614), Oeuvres du seigneur de Brantome, published in The Hague in 1740.
His signature appears on the majority of the plates used in the Hague version of Abbé Prevost's, Histoire générale des voyages, ou Nouvelle collection de toutes les relations de voyages par mer et par terre qui ont été publiées jusqu'à présent dans les différentes langues. The present lot is plate 10 from the same book.
