The son of a high court official, John Byam Liston Shaw was a British painter and illustrator, born in Madras. He arrived in England in 1878 and attended the Royal Academy Schools and St John's Wood School of Art. The Pre-Raphaelites had a strong impact on his style, and he was most successful when painting medieval topics. However, The Boer War (1901, City Art Gallery, Birmingham), which depicted a young woman reflecting on the death of a loved one, was once undoubtedly his most well-known work. Along with his close friend and painter Rex Vicat Cole (1870–1940), he created the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art in Kensington in 1910. Vicat Cole went on to write The Art and Life of Byam Shaw (1932). Another close friend of mine, Eleanor, was one of the teachers.
