Charles Johnson Payne aka Snaffles (1884–1967)
Payne was a British artist, popularly known as Snaffles, and is most recognised for his lighthearted portrayals of classic English hobbies. Snaffles primarily used watercolor and line drawing to create these images, which are often depicted as polo, horse racing, and fox hunting. The captions for these scenes typically include a brief witticism or joke, such as "Prepare to receive cavalry!" to further explain the scene. The artist was born in Leamington Spa, United Kingdom, on January 17, 1884. During World War I, he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery and wrote for military newspapers. Most famously, he contributed to the creation of camouflage for the Home Guard during World War II. Payne passed away in Tisbury, United Kingdom, in 1967.
