Lloyd's Natural History is a notable work in the field of natural history. Published in London by Edward Lloyd between 1896 and 1897, this comprehensive sixteen-volume series was edited by Richard Lydekker. The series encompassed a wide array of topics within natural history, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes, insects, and more. Each volume was dedicated to a specific group of organisms, offering detailed descriptions, illustrations, and information about their behavior, habitats, and distribution.

Richard Lydekker, a distinguished British naturalist and geologist, was well-regarded for his extensive contributions to vertebrate paleontology and zoology. Although not among the most illustrious figures in the annals of zoogeographical research, he did delve into the field on a regular basis, typically as a result of his research on vertebrate palaeontology. He began his career as a young man with the Geological Survey of India, where he conducted in-depth research that helped him later on in his career at the British Museum of Natural History. Upon his return from India, the Museum tasked him with creating catalogues for its fossil vertebrate collections, a task he completed in under ten years. In his later years, Lydekker had a growing interest in public spaces, helping to alter the Museum's exhibit design and penning numerous works with a more popular orientation.

His expertise and meticulous research are reflected in the detailed content of Lloyd's Natural History. The series remains a seminal book and a valuable historical resource for researchers, scholars, and enthusiasts interested in the natural world of the late 19th century.
