Gustave Le bon (7 May 1841 - 13 December 1931) was a French polymath whose areas of interest included anthropology, psychology, sociology, medicine, invention. In 1884, he was commissioned by the French government to travel around Asia and report on the civilisations there. The results of his journeys culminated in the publication of this book based on Le Bon’s photographs, watercolour paintings, and documents. The book is divided into six substantial sections, and provides in-depth studies of the subcontinent’s climate, topography, inhabitants, monuments, science, art, literature, and languages. In this book Gustave Le bon applauded Indian architecture, art and religion.
