The book has photographs taken by Raghu Rai that portray Sikh’s way of life, their modes of worship, their baptisms, weddings and rustic dances and their attempts to keep alive their marital traditions been more vividly captured by the camera or as clearly explained in words by Khuswant Singh.
Khuswant Singh offers an accurate account of the early Sikhism up till the division of the Punjab in the 20th century and the exodus to East Africa and Britain. But when we get to the current day, the book really takes off. He gives a gripping story of how Hindu troops acting under the direction of the Indian government stormed the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984. This directly resulted in the murder of Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards, which in turn sparked an immediate and extensive backlash that resulted in thousands of people being killed.
