This oleograph published by the Ravi Varma Press depicts the nationalist leader Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
The British colonial authorities called him "The Father of the Indian Unrest". He was also conferred with the title of ‘Lokmanya” which means "accepted by the people as their leader". Gandhiji called him “The Maker of Modern India”. The oleograph shows the pivotal time in Indian history where the freedom movement was entering mass consciousness through mediums of communication including the Ravi Varma Press.
