This book was made in conjunction with the Exhibition of Old Bombay, 1911-1912. The Exhibition of Old Bombay evoked memories of old residents, including the publisher, who aimed to revive the city's past. The book consulted various authorities, including James Douglas, Gerson da Cunha, J M Maclean, Captain Grindlay, P B Malabari, Commander Rowand, F Drewitt, and Mr S M Edwardes' encyclopaedic Gazetteer of Bombay. The illustrations were lent by friends, and The Byculla and Bombay Clubs provided photographs of Europeans and notable Europeans.
The aim of the publisher was to stimulate interest in the picturesque and heroic aspects of a city that has suffered from an all too exclusive devotion of its inhabitants to business interests.
