One of the first European photographers to practise his craft in Bombay was Edward Taurines, who operated a business there for almost two decades. The Bombay Photographic Society, the first official Indian organisation devoted to photography, was founded in 1854 and was the most active centre for art among the Presidencies. A further ten years or so saw the emergence of studios like Edward Taurines' on South Bombay's busiest streets, documenting the neighbourhood's architecture, nature, commerce, and industry as well as its residents. The images in this lot are an example of this. The Taurines Studio, which was located on Medows Street (now Nagindas Master Road), specialised in photographs that showcased city life for a Western audience.
