The original Walkeshwar Temple was built by the Silhara Kings (r. 810–1260) on Malabar Hill, Bombay's highest point. The Portuguese demolished the temple, which Rama Kamath reconstructed in 1715. By 1860, there were 50 dharamshalas, 10 to 20 smaller temples nearby, and the temple attracted a lot of visitors. Near the temple, fairs were held. The first bungalow at Malabar Hill was constructed by Mountstuart Elphinstone while he served as governor from 1818 to 1827. Following this, many more people constructed homes in this neighbourhood, turning it into the upscale neighbourhood that it is today. Looking south, Back Bay can be seen in the background in this picture.
