The Government House (the residence of the Governor, now Raj Bhavan) can just be seen in the top right-hand corner. It extends over a peninsula jutting into the Arabian Sea.

Malabar Hill is the highest point in Bombay (15 metres above sea level). Looking south, the Arabian sea can be seen in the background in this picture. The first bungalow at Malabar Hill was constructed by Mountstuart Elphinstone while he served as governor from 1819 to 1827. Following this, many more people constructed homes in this neighbourhood, turning it into the upscale neighbourhood that it is today.

The construction of the Government House began in 1772 during the British colonial period. It was originally intended to serve as the residence of the British Governors of Bombay Presidency. The design of the Government House was influenced by Georgian and Neoclassical architectural styles, reflecting the architectural preferences of the time. The building was completed in 1775, and the first Governor to occupy it was Sir William Hornby in 1779.

After India gained independence in 1947, the building's name was changed from Government House to Raj Bhavan, which means "Government Residence" in Hindi. Raj Bhavan continued to be the official residence of the Governor of Maharashtra.
