Elphinstone Circle, now known as Horniman Circle, is a historical landmark located in Bombay (Mumbai). It has a rich history and continues to be an important public space in the city. Elphinstone Circle, named after Lord Elphinstone, the Governor of Bombay Presidency from 1853 to 1860, was designed and built in the mid-19th century during British colonial rule. Elphinstone Circle was laid out in 1869 on the site of the old Bombay Green in Fort area of the city. The buildings were designed by James Scott as part of the redevelopment of Bombay which began under the Governorship of Sir Bartle Frere in the 1860s.
The circle was part of the urban planning and development initiatives undertaken by the British in Bombay. It was designed as a large open space surrounded by important buildings, reflecting the Neoclassical and Victorian Gothic architectural style favored by the British at the time. The area around Elphinstone Circle was developed as a central business district, and it became a hub for various commercial and administrative activities. The circle was adorned with gardens, trees, and a central monument, creating a serene and picturesque environment in the heart of the bustling city.
In 1968, the circle was renamed Horniman Circle in honour of Benjamin Horniman, an Englishman who supported Indian freedom movements and contributed to social and educational causes in the city. Horniman Circle continues to be an important public space and a well-maintained garden in the Fort area of Mumbai. The circle is surrounded by prominent buildings that house commercial establishments, offices, and cultural institutions. The Asiatic Society of Mumbai, a renowned institution for the promotion of literature, science, and art, is located near the circle. The circle itself features well-landscaped gardens, a central pathway, and a prominent statue of Albert Abdullah David Sassoon, a Baghdadi Jewish businessman and philanthropist who played a significant role in Mumbai's development.
Horniman Circle serves as a place of relaxation, recreation, and cultural events for residents and visitors alike. The historic significance of the area, combined with its architectural beauty and serene ambiance, makes it a popular destination for people seeking a break from the city's hustle and bustle.
