In his pioneering work Major G F MacMunn, DSO of the Royal Field Artillery, obtained previously unheard of insights into the full scope and operation of the Indian Army, from the time of the English East India Company until he wrote this book in the turbulent times of 1911. MacMunn skillfully demonstrates the many traits of this one-of-a-kind Army in the world by mentioning the tale of the formation of the Indian Army up to the extent and definition of the precise same Army. This book is greatly aided by Major A C Lovett of the Gloucestershire Regiment, who has donated his creative abilities to illustrate it with beautiful images of the many regiments of the Indian Army, this book can well be described as one of the principal books meant for any collector of military history.

This book contains 72 full-page illustrations in colour recording the uniforms of soldiers including the Governor-General's bodyguard; Governor's bodyguard at Bombay; British officers of the Indian cavalry; 3rd Skinner's horse; 14th Murray's Jat Lancers; the former Hyderabad contingent cavalry; 38th King George's Own Central India Horse; 2nd Queen's Own Sappers and Miners; Rajput regiments; Dogras; Punjab regiments; 42nd Deoli regiment; Frontier force; Carnatic infantry; Mahratha infantry; Gurkha Rifles; Alwar Lancers; Bikaner Ganga Risala; Imperial Service troops.
