This instrument is a compact, upright English piano made by The Knight Company, a highly respected British piano manufacturer founded in 1936. The company was dedicated to producing small pianos of exceptional tone and quality, and were the only piano makers in Steinway Hall, New York, alongside Steinway & Sons.
The present lot was manufactured circa 1950s. The piano carries the label 'KNIGHT' above the music stand. The wooden case is centred by a pierced music board, hinged top and metal pedals. The piano is supported by wheels, which provides ease in movement. The fallboard of the piano opens into the machinery, wherein the panel behind the hammer rail holds a metal plaque with the inscription 'KNIGHT BRITISH PATENTS'.
The machinery of the present lot is constructed by the Renner company which is evident from the maker's mark stamp on one of the hammer keys which states 'Louis Renner, Stuttgart'. The company was founded in 1882 by Louis Renner as a small workshop in Stuttgart, Germany, eventually growing the business into one of the most prestigious manufacturers of piano parts. Steinway & Sons took over Louis Renner GmBH & Co. in 2019.
