"This is plate 3 from James Baillie Fraser's 'Views of Calcutta and its Environs'. Fraser (1783-1856) arrived in Calcutta in 1814 and in six years produced these animated sketches of the busy city.
Chowringhee Road, now Jawarhalal Nehru Road, was the main north-south road through the city, and also the main settlement for the British in Calcutta at the time. The road runs for two miles along the Maidan, a wide, grassy open space." (Source: British Library Board)
Robert Havell junior was the son of Robert Havell senior, a painter, engraver, and publisher. Robert junior co-founded the business R. Havell & Son with his father. The father and son collaborated on a number of projects, including their 'Series of Views of the Public Buildings and Bridges in London' (1821-22) and 'Birds of America' (1827-39) for American naturalist John James Audubon. However, Robert senior passed away in 1832, leaving his son to finish the job. Havell concentrated on oil painting for the next few years. He chose to travel to America as a result of his connection with Audubon, settling in Tarrytown, New York state, in 1857. He rose through the ranks of the Hudson River School. He died at the age of 84 in Tarrytown.
