Epic 17th century map of Asia, portraying the Ottoman, Persian, Mogul, and Chinese empires, as well as Tartaria, from Anatolia and Africa to Indonesia and Japan. A decorative cartouche depicting diverse oriental scenes, including flora, fauna and figures.

Peter Schenk (1660-1711) was a well-known German engraver and cartographer who worked in both Amsterdam and Leipzig.

Nicolaas Witsen (1641-1717) was a Dutch statesman who held a number of high-ranking positions in the Dutch government. In his spare time, he worked as a cartographer, maritime writer, and shipbuilding expert. He was also an expert on Russian affairs. In recognition of his great accomplishments, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
