Plate seven from 'Picturesque Scenery in the Kingdom of Mysore' by James Hunter (d.1792). This aquatint is based on a picture by Hunter depicting the family tombs of Haider Ali (c.1722 - 1782), the king of Mysore in the mid Eighteenth Century, at Kolar, near to Bangalore. Immediately after Haider Ali's death in 1782, his body was embalmed at Kolar and lay in state for four months before being removed to the Mausoleum at Srirangapatnam. Plate three from 'Picturesque Scenery in the Kingdom of Mysore' by James Hunter (d.1792). This aquatint is based on a picture by Hunter, and depicts the tomb of Haider Ali, the king of Mysore, who died in 1782. The Mausoleum was built at Srirngapattnam, and is situated in a Cypress Garden which allegedly contained varieties of flowering plants from Kabul, Persia, Mauritius and Turkey. These plants were gathered by Haider Ali's son and successor, Tipu Sultan. (Source: British Library Board)

During the Third Anglo-Mysore War, when British and Company soldiers defeated Tipu Sultan, James Hunter served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery under Cornwallis. Views include sites in Seringapatam, Bangalore, as well as the surrounding countryside and British encampments.
