This first volume is based widely on Kolkata (Calcutta). The author himself was a viceroy between 1899 - 1905. He resolved to write the history of the finest government houses. The chapters detail the history and architecture of the Government houses, Council houses, Indian houses of Warren Hastings, The Victoria Memorial Hall, and other monuments. The last chapter describes the ceremonies and entertainment practices in these houses. The second volume contains an account of the Governors General and Viceroys who preceded Curzon in office.
