G A Henty was a prolific English author, special reporter, and Imperialist who was born in Trumpington, England. He is most renowned for his late-nineteenth-century historical adventure novels.

He went to Westminster School in London and then to Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, where he was an avid sportsman. Henty once stated in an interview that his storytelling abilities arose from stories he told his children after supper. In 1868, he published his first children's book, Out on the Pampas, and named the major characters after his children. While most of the 122 books were for children, he also published adult novels and non-fiction works such as The March to Magdala (1868) and Those Other Animals (1869), short stories for the likes of The Boy's Own Paper and edited the Union Jack, a weekly boys magazine.
