F. Brinkley (1841-1912) was the owner and publisher of Japan Mail and resided in Japan for over 40 years during the Meiji Era (1868-1912), an era of major changes, characterised by the opening of Japan to Western ideas and Technologies. Brinkley's accounts of Japan and China highlight the fascination with which the West considered the east at the end of the nineteenth Century. Brinkley exploited his knowledge of Asia to create voluminous writings that have satisfied and heightened the curiosity of his western readers. This important work deals with the art, the history, the culture, the politics, the literature, the ceramics, the painting, the religion and the education of Japanese and Chinese.
