The sections deal with Queen Victoria's life, the state of the United Kingdom, and the Colonial Empire; this was a nation at the height of its power and assured of its position in the world, without the jingoism apparent in lesser histories.

This was published at the height of an Empire ruled by "One Flag", "One Navy and Army" and "One Queen": the age of "jingoism" when the words "send in a gun boat" would strike fear into any rebellious heart.
