The Hindustan Times had the banner headline, "Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri dead", with an interesting strapline, "Sudden collapse after heart attack", underlining the major significance of the day not just in terms of India, but of the world as a whole.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second prime minister of India, died on 11 January 1966, leaving the nation mourning the irreparable loss. He played a key role in signing of the Tashkent Agreement, which ended the Indo-Pak war. He died the following day in Tashkent, away from home. His popular slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' is reminiscent of his ideology.
