This coloured lithograph is taken from plate 12 of Sir Charles D'Oyly's 'Views of Calcutta and its environs'. Robert Clive (legendarily known as Clive of India) had been governor of Bengal in the 18th century. He had reputedly lived in a house on a bend north of the Old Fort William, and this became known as Clive Street. Now called Netaji Subhash Road, the road was at the mercantile heart of Calcutta and many trading offices were established here. D'Oyly's depiction of decaying Palladian architecture and thatched Indian huts is an unusual commentary on what was, and still is, the commercial district of the city.
