Colonel William Tolly wanted to create a functioning canal in the city by enlarging the dried-up bed of the Kidderpore Creek, to facilitate the passage of ships from the river Hooghly to the delta in the east. Completed in 1777, the 17-mile long canal was popularly known as Tolly's Nulla (nullah meaning creek-bed).

Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant (2 July 1793 - 1 November 1858) was a French sailor who worked his way up through the ranks from common seaman to rear-admiral. In 1836–37 he captained a 21-month voyage round the globe in which the scientists made many useful botanical and zoological observations, later described in an 11-volume illustrated account. He was briefly Minister of Navy and Colonies in 1851 during the French Second Republic. (Source: Wikipedia)

On this expedition Vaillant employed naturalists Joseph Eydoux and François Souleyet, and watercolour artists Barthélémy Lauvergne and Théodore-Auguste Fisquet. "The principal aims of the voyage were political; to show the French flag in various areas in the Pacific, including the Hawaiian Islands, China, and Cochin China; to extend protection to a number of French subjects; and to draw up comprehensive reports on the countries visited, including Brazil, Chile, the Marianas, and the Philippines" (Hill)
