The contrast experienced by the relative homogeneity of rural life vis-a-vis the hybridity of the city, where disparate influences co-existed, was perhaps the starting point for the development of a dual consciousness that has sustained Jyoti Bhatt's practice. The sense of shared location has certainly been an advantage in comprehending Bhatt's imagery and its semantic content. Like many practitioners of his time, Bhatt has maintained a daily record of his thoughts and ideas. The diary pages contains hand-written text in Gujarati by Bhatt which have been translated into English.
