The book contains a brief history of the viceroys along with their dwellings, i.e., the government houses. This first volume is based widely on Calcutta. The author himself was a viceroy between 1899 - 1905. He resolved on writing the history of the finest government houses. The chapters detail the history and architecture of the Government houses, Council houses, Indian houses of Warren Hastings, The Victoria Memorial Hall, and other monuments.
