First British edition of Ain-i-Akbari.

The book was first published in Calcutta in 1786, this is the first UK edition, published in 1800. Francis Gladwin served in the Bengal army, was a lexicographer and translator and eventually became a professor in Fort William College in Calcutta in 1800.

Akbar (1542-1605) commissioned the Ain-i-Akbari as a collection of statistical reports, administration reports, and gazetteer about the empire. Akbar also sought to incorporate indigenous knowledge and traditions into the codified knowledge of the Mughal Empire. It was compiled by Akbar’s Grand Vizier Abu’l Fazl ibn Mubarak [1551-1602] as the third and final volume of ‘Akbarnama’, the official history of Mughal emperor’s reign.
