John B Seely, The Wonders of Elora; or, the narrative of a journey to the temples and dwellings excavated out of a mountain of granite, and extending upwards of a mile and a quarter, at ELORA, IN THE EAST INDIES by the route of Poona, Ahmed-Nuggur, and Toka, returning by Dowlutabad and Aurungabad; with some general observations on the people and country, London: Whittaker, 1825
pp. xx, 597 + 12 plates; half leather bound with marbled boards and 5 raised bands at the spine
9 x 6 in (22.5 x 15 cm)
Second Edition, with considerable additions and improvements.
Seely was the first to contemplate an Indian monument in the context of the 'sublime'. Making favourable comparisons with the western tradition in architecture he saw a monument "surpassed by no relic of antiquity in the known world". His adulation of Ellora was to overshadow other temples in the eyes of scholars and travellers for many years.
