SIR CHARLES D`OYLY (1781 - 1845)

VIEW IN THE SERAMPORE ROAD. A SETTLEMENT, 1848

Estimate: Rs 60,000-Rs 75,000 ( $825-$1,030 )

View in the Serampore Road. A Settlement

1848

Later hand-coloured lithograph on paper

13 x 18 in   |  33 x 45.7 cm

"This coloured lithograph was taken from plate 17 of Sir Charles D'Oyly's 'Views of Calcutta and its Environs'. This print shows Serampore (Shrirampur) Road, one of the native parts of Calcutta. D'oyly drew more images of Indian life in Calcutta than any other contemporary artist. These were usually strikingly pretty but the locations of the views were difficult to pinpoint. Hence his images were not usually of any topographical value.

Serampore had been a Danish settlement from 1699 to 1845. It stood opposite Barrackpore, which was a former military cantonment converted into a country retreat and park for the Governor-General." (Source: British Library Board)
