SIR CHARLES D`OYLY (1781 - 1845)

TOWN AND PORT OF CALCUTTA, 1848

Estimate: Rs 60,000-Rs 75,000 ( $825-$1,030 )

Town and Port of Calcutta

1848

Later hand-coloured lithograph on paper

14.5 x 22.5 in   |  37.1 x 57.4 cm

This coloured lithograph is taken from plate 5 of Sir Charles D'Oyly's 'Views of Calcutta and its Environs'. The man in the foreground of this image sketching the scene may be D'Oyly's self-portrait. The tree in the centre conveniently divides the view into the Esplanade with its grand buildings, on the right, and the ships on the Hooghly river, on the left. The whole scene portrays the liveliness and prosperity of Calcutta at the time. (Source: British Library Board)
