Peepul Tree in the Palace of Delhi
1867
Chromolithograph on paper
13.5 x 9.5 in | 34.3 x 24.1 cm
"This chromolithograph is taken from plate 34 of William Simpson's 'India: Ancient and Modern'. European children are pictured playing around a colossal tree in the grounds of the Red Fort in Delhi, accompanied by their ayahs (Indian nannies) and syces (horse grooms). The peepul is a variety of fig tree considered sacred in India, the Buddha being believed to have attained enlightenment while meditating under one". (Source: British Library Board)
