The present lot is a compilation of various Indian myths, featuring significant figures from major religious traditions, including Krishna, Buddha, and Shiva with chapters on the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The massive undertaking was initiated by Sister Nivedita, an Irish teacher, social activist and disciple of Swami Vivekananda, who died in 1911 before the project could be completed. Per her wishes, historian Ananda Coomaraswamy completed the remaining two-thirds of the book. All the colour plates in this book were illustrated by Indian artists Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, K Venkatappa, Surendranath Kar, Kshitindranath Mazumdar and Asit Kumar Haldar, who worked under Tagore at the time.
