A history of Gujarat from the 8th century up to the arrival of the British, as well as a survey of folk literature. Forbes, a colonial administrator in Ahmedabad, was instrumental in the revival of Gujarati literature. When he died in 1865 the Gujarati poet Dalpatram composed the elegy Farbesvirah.
