When the British came to India, apart from economic and administrative interests, there was felt an increasing interest in Indian culture and literature which led to a demand for such a work as is presented here in Indian Wisdom.
Sir Monier Williams was the second Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University, England. He studied, documented and taught Asian languages, especially Sanskrit, Persian and Hindustani. He was a pioneer in the western interest and work in the Indian tradition. He is also the author of other useful books on the subject, the most important being a Sanskrit-English dictionary (1899).
