Verso illustrated with a decorative woodcut illustration - the woodcut border surrounding the type of the verso is the work of famous German painter and print maker Hans Holbein.

Important early map of part of India and the Indian Ocean, extending north to the sources of the Indus and Ganges Rivers, based upon Ptolemy, published by Sebastian Munster in his book Georgraphia Circa 1542, in Basel, printed by Heinrich Petri.

Sebastian Munster (20 January 1488 - 26 May 1552) is regarded as one of the most important map makers of the 16th Century. He was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and a Christian Hebraist scholar, a linguist and a mathematician, who initially taught Hebrew in Heidelberg. He starting mapping Germany in 1529.

His Geographia is considered a cartographic landmark that included not only Ptolemaic maps, but also a number of landmark modern maps, including the first separate maps of the 4 continents, the first map of England and the earliest obtainable map of Scandinavia. Munster dominated cartographic world during the mid-16th Century.
