Estimate: Rs 50,000-Rs 75,000 ( $705-$1,060 )

Magni Mogolis Imperium

Jan Jansson, Magni Mogolis Imperium, Amsterdam, Circa 1640s
17 x 21 in (42.5 x 52.5 cm)

A highly attractive and one of the most historically important maps of India. This remarkable map depicts the entire Mughal Empire and it extends from Afghanistan and Kashmir in the North, to the middle of the Deccan in the South and from the mouths of the Indus in the East, to Burma in the West. The map divides the Empire into the Mughal Subhas. The title cartouche, in the upper left hand corner, depicts the modified seal of the Emperor Jahangir featuring roundels bearing his name and those of his eight dynastic predecessors going back to the great Turco-Mongol ruler, Timur (Tamerlane the Great). In the middle is the symbol of the Mughal Empire, featuring a lion at repose in front of a rising sun.

"Johannes Janssonius (1588, Arnhem - buried July 11, 1664, Amsterdam) (born Jan Janszoon, in English also Jan Jansson) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived and worked in Amsterdam in the 17th century. Janssonius was born in Arnhem, the son of Jan Janszoon the Elder, a publisher and bookseller. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. (Source: Wikipedia)
