India Intra et Extra Gangem
Christoph Weigel the Elder, India Intra et Extra Gangem, Nuremberg, 1720
12 x 15.2 in (30 x 38 cm)
An extraordinary original hand coloured map of India, extending from India to Vietnam. It was based of Ptolemy projections, incorporating Ptolemy names of various cities. The allegorical cartouche shows of a scene where an elephant in armour is carrying many soldiers in its howdah at his back, who are attacking enemies at the ground. The banner of the map is underneath the elephant which bears the title of map. An extremely rare map of this era.
Christoph Weigel was a printer and engraver based in Nuremburg, Germany. He established his publishing house in Nuremberg which published around 70 books and many engravings. He drew the engravings in the workshops himself. He worked closely with imperial geographer Johann Homann. He was brilliant in making engravings.
