Estimate: Rs 30,000-Rs 40,000 ( $425-$565 )

Carte des Cote de Malabar et de Coromanden

Johannes Covens and Pierre Mortier, Carte des Cote de Malabar et de Coromanden, Amsterdam, Circa 1725
19.2 x 23 in (48 x 57.5 cm)

This interesting original hand coloured outlined map in French shows the Indian subcontinent, from Gujarat and Bengal South to Sri Lanka and the Maldives included in the West. It details coastal towns, internal settlements, hills, and roads. This map also depicts various trade routes prevalent in those days.

A title cartouche in the lower right corner is dedicated to Louis XV who was then the King of France in 1723. Two compass roses flank either side of the subcontinent, complete with notes about magnetic variation. North of the Maldives, five scale bars allows one to calculate in a variety of distances.

Covens and Mortier was a Dutch map publishing company which published many maps for over 100 years from 1720's to mid-1800's.
