The Nayak Dynasty was founded by Vishwanath Nayak, and the period saw a lot of wealth and prosperity. During this dynasty, beautiful edifices were constructed and intricately sculpted stone figures of deities adorned palaces and homes of the aristocracy as well as public places.
This stone head would have once been placed in the Gopuram of an ancient temple. The purpose of heads such as this one was to ward off evil. They were placed inside various parts of the roof or Gopuram.
The stylization is simple and the features are in line with the dynasty. The eyes are large and prominent. The condition is very good with all the features intact. A pair of fangs protrudes from below the lips indicating the power of the guardian. The light colour, fine condition and simple minimalistic design make the object a very pleasing work of art.
