The present lot is a pair of brass door knockers likely originating from a mansion in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. A common feature of South Indian architecture, these would adorn doors crafted from Burmese teak or rose wood. During the 19 th and early 20 th centuries, Madurai and Thanjavur were well-known centres for producing fine metal work, including door knockers. Metal work emerging from this region often used zoomorphic forms from mythology, such as the present lot, which is designed as a pair of stylised parrots with a floral disc that would fit into the wooden door.
