The present lot is a large and detailed map of southern India from Mumbai and Aurangabad, down till a part of Sri Lanka/Ceylon. The original outline colour indicated the British Possessions, the territory of the Rajah of Mysore, the Marhatta (Maratha) Countries, the Nizam's Dominions, the territory of the Rajah of Sittarra (Satara), and Travancore, with notes about the dates and battles related to the British conquest of India in the 18th century.
The map was engraved by James Wyld, who was successor to William Faden, one of the luminaries of late 18th century publishing in England. Wyld maintained the exemplary standard of graphic and factual excellence established by his predecessor and his maps are considered among the finest during the early 19th century.
