Camphor chests are made from the wood of cinnamomum camphora, an evergreen tree with a distinct scent, and are natural repellents against moths and insects. They have historically been used for storing and transporting goods, including clothing, blankets, silks, documents, tea, spices, and porcelain. More ornate varieties, with carvings depicting dragons, ships and animals, were also used as decorative objects and included in bridal dowries. The present lot is adorned with brass clasps and cornices, with embellishments that indicate a confluence of Western and local traditions and crafts.
