John Davy was an army surgeon, anatomist and physiologist who arrived in Ceylon in 1816. anHe accompanied Sir Robert Brownrigg on his tour of the central highlands and Uva province. Davy penned this account following the tour with Brownrigg. Besides his travel experiences, Davy writes about geology, flora, fauna, climate, snakes and leeches. He provides a detailed description of the peoples of the Kandyan region, their government, laws, cosmology and the Buddhist religion. The author was the younger brother of Sir Humphry Davy, the noted chemist and inventor.
